Certification requirements and legal remedies

The appointment of interpreters and translators to work for courts of law, public authorities and notaries public used to be subject to individual laws in every federal state until now. The German Court Interpreters' Act, which took effect as of 01 January 2023, now provides for uniform requirements to be met for the general appointment of sworn interpreters limited to a renewable term of 5 years each. Competence for general appointment still resides with the Regional Court or Higher Regional Court in whose jurisdiction an interpreter has his or her residence or permanent business establishment.
